Planning a big party can be pretty difficult. You have to figure out a budget before you’re sure how many people will come. You have to see to it that you’ll have enough food for all your guests while making sure you don’t buy too much.

Setting Limits

The distributive property can help you figure out how much you’ll need to spend on your party. Imagine that your food will cost about $3 a guest. You know that 5 of your friends will definitely show up, but you’re not sure how many others will come.  The expression \begin{align*}3(5+x)\end{align*} will help you figure out how much to spend. You’ll have to buy $15 worth of food plus three times the number of extra guests who show up. If two more people decide to come, you’ll spend \begin{align*}\$15 + \$6 = \$21\end{align*}. If all 10 of your extra guests come, you’ll need to spend \begin{align*}\$15 + \$30 = \$45\end{align*}.

Planning can become even more difficult when you’re planning for a really big event, such as a wedding. Catering companies often want you to pay well in advance, before you know how many people are coming. You have to guess how many guests are likely to come and leave room for last-minute arrivals.
