Decimals as Percents

Lisa works at a spice factory. She’s writing a description of their new barbeque spice blend for their catalogue. Every pound of the new barbeque blend contains 0.1 more pounds of paprika than the old blend. Lisa wants to describe the increase as a percent. What is the percent increase of paprika in the new recipe?

In this concept, you will learn how to convert decimals to percents.

### Writing Decimals as Percents

In order to write a percent as a decimal, remove the percent sign and move the decimal point two places into the left. These two places represent the hundredths place of the decimal.

31% is written as 0.31.

Decimals can also be written asa percent by doing the reverse. Move the decimal point two places to the right because two decimal places represent hundredths and percents are out of 100. Then, add a percent sign.

Write 0.14 as a percent.

First, move the decimal point two places to the right. Then, add the percent sign.

0.14=14%\begin{align*}0.14=14\%\end{align*}

0.14 is written as 14%.

For a decimal number with a zero in the tenths place, move the decimal point two places to the right and write the percent without the zero. Remember, the zero is only a place holder.

Write .03 as a percent.

0.03=3%\begin{align*}0.03=3\%\end{align*}

0.03 is written as 3%.

For a single digit decimal number, move the decimal point two places to the right and put a zero in the ones place.

Write .2 as a percent.

0.20=20%\begin{align*}0.20=20\%\end{align*}

0.2 is written as 20%.

If you have a number with more than two decimal digits, repeat the same process, but you will have a percent that is also a decimal.

Write 0.345 as a percent.

0.345=34.5%\begin{align*}0.345=34.5\%\end{align*}

0.345 is written as 34.5%.

### Examples

#### Example 1

Earlier, you were given a problem about Lisa at the spice factory.

She wants to describe the increase of 0.1 pounds of paprika in the new barbeque recipe. To do so, she must convert 0.1 to a percent.

First, she must move the decimal point two places to the right and put a zero in the ones place. Then, she adds a percent sign.

0.10=10%\begin{align*}0.10 = 10\%\end{align*}

She can describe the new barbecue recipe as having 10% more paprika than the old recipe.

#### Example 2

Write the decimal as a percent.

0.009\begin{align*}0.009\end{align*}

First, move the decimal point two places to the right and add a percent sign.

0.009=0.9%\begin{align*}0.009 = 0.9\%\end{align*}

0.009 is written as 0.9%.

#### Example 3

Write the decimal as a percent.

0.85\begin{align*}0.85\end{align*}

Move the decimal point two places to the right and add a percent sign.

0.85=85%\begin{align*}0.85 = 85\%\end{align*}

0.85 is written as 85%.

#### Example 4

Write the decimal as a percent.

0.09\begin{align*}0.09\end{align*}

Move the decimal point two places to the right and add a percent sign.

0.09=9%\begin{align*}0.09 = 9\%\end{align*}

0.09 is written as 9%.

#### Example 5

Write the decimal as a percent.

0.5\begin{align*}0.5\end{align*}

Move the decimal point two places to the right and put a zero in the ones place.

0.50=50%\begin{align*}0.50 = 50\%\end{align*}

0.5 is written as 50%.
