By the look on this girl's face, she's probably not worried about diarrhea or tracking cholera!

Is That An App?

Social media! Love it! Hate it! It seems it's here to stay, and that may be a very good thing as people are finding unexpected uses for it.

No Duh's and Head Scratchers

If you need help scratching a mental itch, use the resources below:

  1. How do health organizations usually track the spread of diseases? What advantage do social networks have over traditional methods? How does the evidence gathered after the Haiti outbreak support this conclusion? Do you find this evidence convincing?
  2. How is it believed cholera was introduced into Haiti? What evidence is there for this transmission pathway? Do you find this evidence convincing? Why or why not? Can you think of another possibility you feel is more likely?
  3. What other situations can you think of where social networks may create more opportunities for the improved transfer of information? Would all these opportunities have positive outcomes? Why or why not?
  4. Would the opportunity to use social networks as an information source be equal in all countries? Why or why not? Can you think of a way to improve this situation?
  5. Were you aware of the ways people can use information from social networks? How does this make you feel about participating in them? Do you think most people using them are aware of how this information can be used?
