We know that one of these stickers costs 5 \cancel{\text{c}} .

Can you figure out how much it would cost for these stickers? In this concept, we will practice skip counting in order to figure out the price of sets of stickers.

Guidance

In order to determine the price of a set of stickers like the one above, we can use the problem solving steps to help us focus.

  • First, describe what you know.
  • Second, identify what your job is. In these problems, your job will be to figure out the price of the set of stickers.
  • Third, make a plan . In these problems, your plan will be to count by the cost of one sticker in order to figure out the total cost.
  • Fourth, solve . Do your plan.
  • Fifth, check . In these problems, you can check your work by adding together the cost of each sticker.

Example A

Look at the picture below:

How much for these stickers?

Solution:

We can use the problem solving steps to help us figure out the price for the stickers.

& \mathbf{Describe:} && \text{One silly sticker is} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& \text{There are} \ 3 \ \text{stickers.}\\&&& \text{The} \ 3 \ \text{stickers don't have a price.}\\& \mathbf{My \ Job:} && \text{Figure out how many cents for} \ 3 \ \text{stickers.}\\& \mathbf{Plan:} && \text{Write} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}} \ \text{on each sticker.}\\&&& \text{Count by} \ 5 \text{s to get the number of cents.}\\& \mathbf{Solve:}

&&& 3 \ \text{stickers cost} \ 15 \cancel{\text{c}}\\& \mathbf{Check:} && \text{Add the row:}\\&&& 5+5+5 = 15 \cancel{\text{c}}

Example B

Look at the picture below:

How much for these stickers?

Solution:

We can use the problem solving steps to help us figure out the price for the stickers.

& \mathbf{Describe:} && \text{One silly sticker is} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& \text{There are} \ 2 \ \text{stickers.}\\&&& \text{The} \ 2 \ \text{stickers don't have a price.}\\& \mathbf{My \ Job:} && \text{Figure out how many cents for} \ 2 \ \text{stickers.}\\& \mathbf{Plan:} && \text{Write} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}} \ \text{on each sticker.}\\&&& \text{Count by} \ 5 \text{s to get the number of cents.}\\& \mathbf{Solve:}

&&& 2 \ \text{stickers cost} \ 10 \cancel{\text{c}}\\& \mathbf{Check:} && \text{Add the row:}\\&&& 5+5 = 10 \cancel{\text{c}}

Example C

Look at the picture below:

How much for these stickers?

Solution:

We can use the problem solving steps to help us figure out the price for the stickers.

& \mathbf{Describe:} && \text{One silly sticker is} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& \text{There are} \ 6 \ \text{stickers.}\\&&& \text{The} \ 6 \ \text{stickers don't have a price.}\\& \mathbf{My \ Job:} && \text{Figure out how many cents for} \ 6 \ \text{stickers.}\\& \mathbf{Plan:} && \text{Write} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}} \ \text{on each sticker.}\\&&& \text{Count by} \ 5 \text{s to get the number of cents.}\\& \mathbf{Solve:}

&&& 6 \ \text{stickers cost} \ 30 \cancel{\text{c}}\\& \mathbf{Check:} && \text{Add each row:}\\&&& 5+5+5 = 15 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& 5+5+5= 15 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& 15 + 15= 30\cancel{\text{c}}

Example D

Look at the picture below:

How much for these stickers?

Solution:

We can use the problem solving steps to help us figure out the price for the stickers.

& \mathbf{Describe:} && \text{One silly sticker is} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& \text{There are} \ 5 \ \text{stickers.}\\&&& \text{The} \ 5 \ \text{stickers don't have a price.}\\& \mathbf{My \ Job:} && \text{Figure out how many cents for} \ 5 \ \text{stickers.}\\& \mathbf{Plan:} && \text{Write} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}} \ \text{on each sticker.}\\&&& \text{Count by} \ 5 \text{s to get the number of cents.}\\& \mathbf{Solve:}

&&& 5 \ \text{stickers cost} \ 25 \cancel{\text{c}}\\& \mathbf{Check:} && \text{Add each row:}\\&&& 5+5+5 = 15 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& 5+5= 10 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& 15 + 10= 25\cancel{\text{c}}

Concept Problem Revisited

We can use the problem solving steps to help us figure out the price for the stickers below.

& \mathbf{Describe:} && \text{One silly sticker is} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& \text{There are} \ 8 \ \text{stickers.}\\&&& \text{The} \ 8 \ \text{stickers don't have a price.}\\& \mathbf{My \ Job:} && \text{Figure out how many cents for} \ 8 \ \text{stickers.}\\& \mathbf{Plan:} && \text{Write} \ 5 \cancel{\text{c}} \ \text{on each sticker.}\\&&& \text{Count by} \ 5 \text{s to get the number of cents.}\\& \mathbf{Solve:}

&&& 8 \ \text{stickers cost} \ 40 \cancel{\text{c}}\\& \mathbf{Check:} && \text{Add each row:}\\&&& 5+5+5+5 = 20 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& 5+5+5+5 = 20 \cancel{\text{c}}\\&&& 20+20 = 40 \cancel{\text{c}}

Vocabulary

Skip counting is counting by a number other than 1. When you count by 2s (2, 4, 6, 8) you are skip counting. In this concept we counted by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, and 10s.
