**Introduction**

Equations are mathematical statements involving expressions that are separated by an equal sign. These expressions can involve one variable (a letter) or two variables (two letters) or more. The expressions can involve whole numbers, decimals, and/or fractions or as you learned in chapter one, they involve any numbers in the real number system. The purpose in solving these equations is to find the numerical values for the variables that make the expressions true.

In this chapter you will learn how to solve linear equations in one variable that are simple as well as those that contain common fractions and decimals. The equations will also involve the distributive property. Once the task of solving the equations algebraically has been mastered, students will proceed to expressing words first as algebraic expressions and then as linear equations. Students will continue this process by solving the equation to solve the given word problem.

In addition to solving linear equations, students will also learn to solve linear inequalities algebraically and then how to graph the result on a number line. The final concept of this chapter will deal with equations and inequalities involving absolute value.
