Chapter 1: Basics of Geometry

Difficulty Level: At Grade Created by: CK-12

Here you will review the basics of geometry that you have seen throughout your study of math and preview some of the new ideas that will be explored in geometry. You will review the three dimensions, angles and lines, shapes and solids. You will also review perimeter, area, volume, and surface area.

Chapter Outline

Chapter Summary

You learned that a point has dimension zero, a line has dimension one, a plane has dimension two, and a solid has dimension three. You learned about different types of angles and how lines create angles.

You looked at many different types of polygons, and special types of triangles and quadrilaterals. You learned the difference between area and perimeter, and how to find the area and perimeter of quadrilaterals and triangles. You learned that the three sides of a right triangle are related with the Pythagorean Theorem. You also learned about circles and composite shapes.

Finally, you explored solids. You learned about volume and surface area and how surface area is connected to the net of a solid. You considered both nets and cross sections as ways of seeing a three dimensional solid in two dimensions.
