This lesson reintroduces the concepts of stress, strength, deflection, and point of failure while introducing the terms allowable stress, bending stress, and factor of safety. The concepts are studied using mathematical and experimental models.

Students must understand the concepts of force and mass at a basic level, be well-versed in algebra, have a working knowledge of trigonometry, and be able to graph and interpret line plots and histograms. They must be aware of and follow lab safety rules and procedures.
