Life on Earth is extremely diverse. This colorful and lush tropical rain forest features a varied range of plants and trees on Hawaii demonstrating the concept of biodiversity.

Biodiversity is the variety of life and its processes; including the variability of living organisms, the genetic differences among them, and the communities and ecosystems in which they occur. Understanding Biodiversity is a collaboration between the CK-12 Foundation and the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL; http://www.eol.org). The goal of Understanding Biodiversity is to generate an expanding library of biodiversity information aimed at the high school biology classroom. Understanding Biodiversity will consist of species pages describing organisms studied in the life sciences. Individual species pages will provide information for each species relevant to the high school biology curriculum: cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, and physiology.

Secondary level biology classes around the world are invited to submit species information using the Understanding Biodiversity template.
