All cars have many parts in common. There will be an ignition system, a carburetor (at least on older cars), pistons, fan belts, radiators, and many other components needed for the proper functioning of the vehicle. However, the specific component will vary in size, shape, connections, and other important factors from one car to another. We cannot put a steering wheel from a Model T Ford onto a Ferrari – they are two different systems. When we buy a part, we need to specify exactly the part we want.

Why It Matters

  • You heard about a book you want to read. It sounded really interesting, a novel about living in the wilderness. All you can remember is that it had “bears” in the title. In order to find the book, you need much more specific information – a complete title, name of the author, or maybe a catalog number. What you want to avoid is getting the kids’ book “Miss Samantha Bear” or a Ph.D dissertation on bears in upper Siberia.

With so many books available, a specific naming and numbering system allows us to organize and find the appropriate books when we need them [Figure2]

  • The health care field is becoming more complicated every day. Not just the science, but also the administrative issues. When you undergo a medical procedure, a bill is sent out (usually first to your insurance company). The bill contains a code describing what was done to you. This code will most likely be an ICD-9 code (standing for International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems). If you have a common cold, there is an ICD-9 code for it. The treatment would be fairly inexpensive. However, a related code in the same section is for removal of tonsils (a much more costly process). If the exact code is not entered, reimbursement will be incorrect, bills won’t get paid, and a great deal of time is needed to straighten out the situation.
