An area's climate is largely determined by its average temperature and precipitation.

A biome is determined by an area's climate and its living things.

A microclimate is a small area within a larger area in which the climate differs from that of the larger area.

Altitude, or the elevation above sea level, mimics latitude.  Explain why this allows microclimates to have similar climates to climate zones very much unlike its surrounding climate.

 Types of Climate Groups

There are five major classifications of climate groups as defined by the Köppen classification. Fill out the following table with information about the five groups. This reference may be helpful.

Note: For more in depth detail about each type of climate group, click on the name of the climate group in the table below.

Climate group Where is
it found?
Temperature Precipitation
Tropical moist climate
Dry climate
Moist subtropical mid-latitude climate
Continental climate
Polar climate

Bonus: Can you identify different types of life forms that are native to each of these climate groups?
