We know that the universe is expanding. But is everything in the universe also expanding? Is an atom expanding? Is a galaxy expanding? Are you expanding?

Amazing But True!

It turns out that it’s not exactly right to say that the universe is expanding. Although that’s what people say as shorthand to what’s actually happening. What’s really expanding is the space in the universe. The space between objects is expanding but not the objects themselves. That’s true even if that object is a galaxy. But a galaxy is made up of a lot of empty space. Why doesn’t a galaxy expand? An atom is also made up of a lot of empty space. Why doesn’t an atom expand?
