Valuable Natural Resources: Poop Edition!
Haitian SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods) Project
Have you ever thought of your own poop as a precious natural resource that can be used to help make your community more sustainable?
As they begin to rebuild many Haitian communities after the major earthquake in 2010, using all of their natural resources became a necessity. Check out this project: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/specials/in-the-field-specials/holy-crap/
- Before the SOIL project began, all human waste was dumped and slowly began to contaminate the water. This would be considered point source contamination of groundwater. How do the toxins from the waste reach the groundwater?
- Create a model to simulate how the toxins from the waste material would seep into the groundwater. Here is an example: http://www.sciencelearn.org.nz/Contexts/H2O-On-the-Go/Sci-Media/Video/Point-source-contamination
