Inside Out

Cassiopeia A Supernova

Student Exploration

What would a star look like inside out?

If someone said that they were learning about a star from the inside out, most people would think that they were being metaphorical and were going to learn every little detail about stars. But what if they meant, literally, inside out? Sometimes your socks come out of the laundry inside out, and apparently Cassiopeia A’s supernova turned inside out as it exploded! Check it out:

Extension Investigation

  1. Are there other interesting behaviors about stars that we are still discovering? Check out the sprinting star: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2012/igrj11014/kids.html More information about the sprinting star: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2012/igrj11014/ Why do scientists think that this star is moving faster? What evidence do they have to support this claim? Are there any holes in this logic?
  2. Take some time to further explore what the CHANDRA X-Ray Observatory has found in this interactive Sky Map: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/map/index.html
