Valuable Natural Resources: Poop Edition!

Haitian SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods) Project

Student Exploration

Have you ever thought of your own poop as a precious natural resource that can be used to help make your community more sustainable?

As they begin to rebuild many Haitian communities after the major earthquake in 2010, using all of their natural resources became a necessity. Check out this project: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/specials/in-the-field-specials/holy-crap/

Extension Investigation

  1. How has human waste been used in Haiti to make their communities more sustainable? Create a flowchart to show how one change has ignited an entire chain of events.
  2. Can you think of another natural resource that can be conserved in Haiti to improve their conditions? Design a natural resource conservation project that could be implemented in Haiti. Include in your plan what resource you would focus on, what you would do to improve the conservation efforts, and how it would help these communities become more sustainable.
