Indonesian Islands vs. Cascades Mountains
See if you can spot the similarity!
Trickier than you thought? The image on the left is of the island of Sumatra in Indonesia while the image on the right is of the Cascade Mountains in the northwestern part of the United States. Here is a second look at these two spots:
Now what do you notice? From a plate tectonics perspective, how many similarities do these two locations actually have?
- To explore volcanic landforms created by convergent plate boundaries further, take a look at these two expeditions: The Mariana Islands: Costa http://sio.ucsd.edu/marianas/ Costa Rica: What http://sio.ucsd.edu/volcano/expedition/index.html What is similar about how these volcanoes formed? What is different?
- Plot the Cascades, the Indonesian islands, the Mariana islands, and Costa Rica on a world map (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/plate_tectonics/plates.php). Find three other areas on the map that show similar tectonic settings. Research those three locations to find evidence of volcanic activity. Share your findings with your classmates.
