The Amazon Rainforest in Brazil makes its own weather - a lot of that weather is rain! But what came first: the rain or the rainforest?

Amazon rainforest [Figure2]

  • Average annual rainfall in a tropical rainforest is around 70 inches a year.
  • Tropical rainforests are found in the equatorial regions where warm air rises, cools and precipitates.
  • Transpiration in the rainforest leads to precipitation over the rainforest.
  • Angiosperms move a lot of water from the soil to the atmosphere.
  • Logging the rainforest has many deleterious effects. One is a change in the region’s climate.

  1. How do rainforests produce their own rain?
  2. What happens if the cycle of transpiration to precipitation slows down as happens in pine forests?
  3. Why are the tropical regions populated with angiosperms rather than gymnosperms?
  4. What do scientists fear the effect of continued logging will be on the rainforests?
  5. What came first, the rain or the rainforest?
