Putting Things in Perspective

Have you ever wondered how artists can make their paintings look so real? They use perspective to give their paintings a sense of depth, enabling them to look more like the real world. One of the keys to drawing and painting with perspective is the proper use of perpendicular bisectors.

#### How It Works

In three-point perspective, the artist draws a horizontal line across the middle of the paper and puts two vanishing points near the edges of the paper. He then draws a perpendicular bisector for the segment between the two vanishing points. He chooses a third point along the bisector, either above or below the horizontal line. Using this framework, the artist can draw shapes that appear to be moving toward or away from the viewer.

You can use three-point perspective to make your own drawings look more realistic. It's especially useful for drawings of buildings and street scenes. If you create comics or other artwork, try your hand at three-point perspective to add realism and drama to your work.
