When can a cylinder a foot or two across provide high-paying jobs for hundreds of people? When the cylinder is connected to an oil rig! Each day, crude oil pours through long tubes at sites around the United States.

Millions of Gallons a Day

The oil industry in North America has expanded in recent years. Though petroleum is a non-renewable natural resource, geologists have lately discovered new sources of oil throughout the United States. Many of these states previously had not been traditional oil producers. For instance, North Dakota now pumps nearly 4 million gallons of oil every day. This oil comes to the surface through a pipe with a small diameter. Its cylindrical shape allows for the maximum flow of oil through the pipe for the minimum amount of material used to make the pipe.

Each new oil rig provides jobs not only on site but also for truckers and at oil refineries like the one above. Oil and petrochemical jobs draw people to places like North Dakota and southern Texas. These jobs are open to high school graduates and provide on-the-job training. Good math and language skills can help you find a job in the oil and petrochemical industry.
