Extension Investigation

Use the below resources to answer the following questions.

  1. What sorts of evidence do researchers look for when trying to determine if two or more people have the same disease?
  2. Does the presence of a microorganism in a sick person mean that microorganism is the cause of the disease? Why or why not? Explain your thinking as fully as possible.
  3. After the observation of a microorganism in a sick person, why is it useful to obtain a pure culture of that organism to determine if it is the cause of the disease? What sort of investigations are possible once a pure culture is obtained? Why are these sorts of investigations useful in identifying an infectious agent?
