Have you ever bought a model and wondered how it sized up with the real thing? When architects and manufacturers build models, they use scale dimensions to make sure that their models look correct.

Why It Matters

The Statue of Liberty is a national landmark and a symbol of freedom. Many years ago as immigrants arrived at Ellis Island, they were greeted by a statue that towers 305 feet high. Today, many tourists take a tiny Statue of Liberty home with them. These models are related in size to the real Statue of Liberty.

The actual Statue of Liberty is 305 feet (3660 inches) tall. (Her index finger is 8 feet long!) Many models of the Statue of Liberty are only 4 inches tall. Designers must scale all the dimensions of the real statue using the ratio 3660:4 to make sure that the model statue looks right.
