To Burn or Not to Burn
The photo on the left is a landfill. The photo on the right is a natural gas well. What do they have in common? The answer is methane.
Why It Matters
- Methane is a saturated hydrocarbon. One source of methane is decomposing trash in landfills. Methane is also the main component of natural gas, a fossil fuel that is burned for energy.
- If methane escapes into the atmosphere, it is a very potent greenhouse gas. Like other greenhouse gases, it contributes to global warming. That’s the main reason that methane is captured from landfills. You can learn about capturing methane from landfills by watching this video:
