Why are rubber bands are so much fun?

An elastic force is a stretching force on an object to elongate it. Elastic objects are able to move on either side of its relaxed position if given a stretch. Many of us, when we think of the word elasticity, we recall a rubber band. If you were to use a rubber band make a slingshot, the objects that are fired can go very far. That’s because there is an elastic force produced by the rubber band on that object. The property of elasticity occurs on many objects that are made of rubber.

Creative Applications

1. Try this at home. Make two different slingshots, one with a rubber band and one with ordinary yarn. See how far a little rock goes using the two different slingshots.

2. Which slingshot makes the rock go farther? What can you conclude?

3. How does the elastic force relate to the force of push?

4. Extension: Springs also stretch in oscillatory motion about its relaxed position. But it is metal, so then why is it also elastic?
