Do you like ice cream? Most people do. You probably buy your ice cream at a grocery store or ice cream shop. Some people make their own ice cream at home.

  • Believe it or not, it’s really easy to make homemade ice cream. Some people have special ice cream makers in their kitchen. But you can make ice cream without one—as long as you use plenty of salt.
  • Salt? Who likes salty ice cream? Actually, the salt isn’t used to flavor the ice cream. The salt is used to help it freeze.

  3. What is the freezing point of pure water? What happens to the temperature of water when it starts to freeze?
  4. How does dissolving salt in water change the freezing point of the water? Why? What is this effect called?
  5. Why is a temperature far below 0°C needed in order to freeze the water in ice cream mix?
  6. Describe what happens to ice when it is mixed with rock salt.
  7. If a baggie containing liquid ice cream mix is placed in very cold water, the ice cream mix freezes. Explain why.
  8. Give another real-world application of freezing point depression.
