What kind of movies do you like to watch? Each year, the film industry churns out action movies, sci-fi flicks, romances, comedies, and dramas, to name a few, and billions of dollars are spent in movie theaters across the country. When a highly anticipated movie comes out, people flock to the theaters to line up for the premiere. Have you ever wondered which types of movies are the most highly rated? Are these the same types of movies that make the most money?
Why It Matters
Circle graphs are one way to display data, and the nice thing about a circle graph is that it clearly represents percentages. Percentages help to relate the data values to the whole. Both of the circle graphs below use statistics from the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). The charts compare the movie categories containing films most highly rated by viewers with the categories that have made the most money.
What do these graphs show us? Highly rated movies aren't always the ones that make the most money. For example, dramas are the most highly rated, but they don't make nearly as much money as adventure, action, or fantasy films. If you are in the film industry, this information could mean the difference between backing a box-office draw or investing in a flop.
