Teaching Notes.

Item 1. We have put either and neither into the group with <ei> spelling [\bar{\mathrm{e}}]. Each word also has a variant pronunciation with [\bar{\mathrm{i}}], which would put it in the group with <ei> spelling [\bar{\mathrm{i}}]. For the record, leisure also has two pronunciations: one with [\bar{\mathrm{e}}], which we assume here, and one with [e], short <e>.
