## Review of Long and Short Vowel Patterns

Mark the first vowel in each of these words with a $\mathrm{V}$. Then mark the next two letters, either $\mathrm{V}$ or $\mathrm{C}$. If you get to the end of the word before you have marked three letters, use the tic-tac-toe sign to mark the end of the word:

$& \text{baby} &&\text{hobbies} && \text{monkey} && \text{white} && \text{grandfather} \\& \quad vcv && \quad vcc && \quad vcc && \quad vcv && \quad vcc \\& \text{follows} && \text{cutely} && \text{icing} && \text{pattern} && \text{home} \\& \quad vcc && \quad vcv && \quad vcv && \quad vcc && \quad vcv \\& \text{scene} && \text{yes } && \text{reddest} && \text{rid } && \text{watches} \\& \quad vcv && \quad vcc\# && \quad vcc && cvc\# && \quad vcc \\& \text{union} && \text{yesterday} && \text{hot} && \text{that} && \text{then} \\& vcv && \quad vcc && cvc\# && \quad cvc\# && \quad cvc\# \\& \text{ate} && \text{placing} && \text{ride} && \text{these} && \text{whole} \\& vcv && vcv && vcv && vcv && vcv$

Now in words ending VC# mark the letter in front of V either V or C.

2. Sort the words into this matrix:

Words with the pattern ....
VCC CVC# VCV
Words with short vowels:

follows

hobbies

yesterday

reddest

pattern

grandfather

monkey

watches

1

yes

hot

rid

that

then

2

3
Words with long vowels: 4 5

baby

scene

union

ate

cutely

placing

icing

ride

white

these

home

whole

6

3. In the patterns VCC and CVC# the vowels are short, but in the pattern VCV the first vowel is long.

4. Mark the first vowel in each of these words with a <v>. Then mark the next two letters, either <v> or <c>:

$& \text{hopes} &&\text{alcohol} && \text{uncle} && \text{hobbies} && \text{even} && \text{cutest} \\& \quad vcv && \quad vcc && \quad vcc && \quad vcc && \quad vcv && vcv \\& \text{seller } && \text{sister} && \text{union} && \text{whose} && \text{yesterday} && \text{whitest} \\& \quad vcc && \quad vcc && \quad vcv && \quad vcv && \quad vcc && vcv \\& \text{placing} && \text{lucky} && \text{follow} && \text{safely} && \text{wrong} && \text{written} \\& \quad vcv && \quad vcc && \quad vcc && \quad vcv && \quad vcc && vcc$

5. Now sort the words into this matrix. Several squares should be empty when you are done:

Words with VCC: Words with VCV:
Words with [a]: alcohol
Words with [e]:

seller

yesterday

Words with [i]:

sister

written

:Words with [o]:

follow

hobbies

wrong

Words with [u]:

uncle

Words with [$\bar{\mathrm{u}}$]:

Words with [$\bar{\mathrm{e}}$]: even
Words with [$\bar{\mathrm{i}}$]: whitest
Words with [$\bar{\mathrm{o}}$]: hopes
Words with $\bar{\mathrm{oo}}$: whose
Words with $\mathrm{y}\bar{\mathrm{oo}}$:
