The fastest bird in flight is more difficult to measure, but the common swift holds the record for the fastest verified flying speeds in a bird, at 31m/s (69 mph). Bats have been recorded flying at even higher speeds of up to 45 m/s (99.5 mph), but bats are of course mammals, not birds.
