Flexi Says: Although there are native freshwater lamprey species found in North America, sea lampreys have been invading the Great Lakes over the past 100 years. This invasion was the result of man-made canals, built in the early 1900s, through which the sea lampreys were able to reach the lakes. They have caused a great deal of destruction to the fish industry by preying on economically important populations of trout and other fishes.
