Flexi Says: There are seven phyla in Kingdom Fungi, mostly classified by their form of sexual reproduction. The Zygomycota reproduce sexually with spores called zygospores and asexually with sporangiospores. Basidiomycetes produce spores called basidiospores on club-like stalks called basidia. Ascomycetes form meiotic spores called ascospores, which are enclosed in a special sac-like structure called an ascus. Members of the phylum Chytridiomycota were probably one of the first fungi. The term Deuteromycetes is reserved for fungi that only reproduce asexually.
