Flexi Says: The hypothesis stating that an asteroid impact caused the extinction of dinosaurs and many other organisms is called the Alvarez hypothesis after the father-son team who proposed it in 1980: Luis and Walter Alvarez. The site of the impact, called the Chicxulub crater, had been discovered in 1978 by geophysicists Antonio Camargo and Glen Penfield. Although chemical and mineral evidence of an asteroid impact was found in rock layers dating from that period, it wasn't until 2021 when geologists confirmed the presence of asteroid dust taken from a sample core deep within the Chicxulub crater.
