Flexi Says: Prokaryotic cells are simple cells that evolved before eukaryotes. Therefore, they lack many of the more complex structures of eukaryotic cells. The evolution of a nucleus that organized genetic material allowed eukaryotes to become more specialized and multicellular. However, the relatively simple organization of genetic material in prokaryotes has advantages in some environments as well. For example, the ability of prokaryotes to transfer genetic information in the form of plasmids allows bacteria to transfer genes that protect against antibiotics to other individuals in a population, which helps the bacteria but exacerbates the human problem of antibiotic resistant bacterial infections.
