Atoms are attracted to each other due to the presence of charged particles, protons, and electrons. Although, there will be some repulsion between electrons present in two atoms due to which electrons never come in direct contact with each other, however, protons and electrons in them will have an attraction. Thus, the wave packets in two different atoms will overlap but do not touch each other.
