Flexi Says: Hail is typically measured by the range of size of the hailstones. Individual hailstone size is measured by diameter. Sometimes a soft foam pad called a hail pad is used to record impacts from hailstones. Then a ruler is used to measure the diameters of the dents left in the foam. If a significant amount of hail accumulates, the overall depth can be measured with a simple ruler.
