How are surface mines reclaimed?

Flexi Says:
Reclamation occurs when people attempt to return the mined land to its original state. In general, the reclamation of surface mines includes the following steps:
- reshaping of land, such as filling in the open pit
- replacement of original topsoil if it was removed and stored before mining, or an approved substitute
- reseeding with native vegetation, crops and/or trees
- years of careful monitoring to assure successful regrowth
