Flexi Says: Smoke is made up of particulates of unburned fuel during a combustion reaction (fire). Combustion gives off heat and gases (carbon dioxide and water vapor). The heated gases quickly expand and rise above the cooler surrounding gases in the air. This happens because particles with more heat move apart faster, becoming less dense, and less dense materials rise above denser materials. Smoke particles are carried along with the hot gases as they rise.
