Flexi Says: The oceans are home to an enormous amount of life. That is, they have tremendous biodiversity. Tiny ocean plants, called phytoplankton, create the base of a food web that supports all sorts of life forms. Many of these organisms supply us with food and photosynthetic organisms in oceans are responsible for more than half of the Earth's oxygen production. Fish, crustaceans, bivalves, seaweed, and other marine organisms provide critically important food sources for people around the world. Researchers estimate that more than 3.5 billion people depend on the ocean for their primary source of food. Oceans also provide people with important sources of recreation and connection with nature.
