Flexi Says: Hotspots lie directly above a column of hot rock called a mantle plume. As the tectonic plates move above a hotspot, they form a chain of volcanoes. The rate of plate motion can be estimated by determining the ages of the volcanoes in the chain and their distances from the hotspot (rate = distance/time).
