Flexi Says: The volcanoes on Mars likely formed from magma that rose up from beneath the crust and erupted on the surface repeatedly over long periods of time, somewhat similar to hotspot volcanoes such as Hawaii on Earth. The crust layer of Mars does not appear to be broken into moving tectonic plates like Earth's crust. In fact, much of the heat in the interior of Mars has already been lost and the existing volcanoes are dormant.
