Flexi Says: The sun's corona is 300 times hotter (~18 million degrees Fahrenheit) than the photosphere or the Sun's surface. This is believed to be due to tiny heating bursts called nanoflares which heat up the corona. The temperature of the corona is determined by an instrument called a Spectrograph which measures the temperature using the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation emitted from a given area.
