Flexi Says: Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star. It has aged past the main sequence and expanded due to changes in its nuclear fusion processes in its core. Betelgeuse is so huge now that if it replaced the Sun at the center of our solar system, its outer surface would extend past the orbit of Jupiter. In 2019-2020, Betelgeuse went through cycles of dimming which were visible to the unaided eye. Scientists now think the dimming was due to the ejection of huge amounts of material from the star into space, creating a dust cloud that obscured the light of the star.
