Sunil Gupta, a scientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai, and his colleagues used a muon telescope to measure the electric potential of this thunderstorm at 1.3 billion volts! This measurement represents the power of the entire electric field that was generated by the thunderstorm, rather than a single bolt of lightning.
