Cleaning Up Groundwater

Study Tip
Consider the process of cleaning up groundwater. Do you think it is worth it to clean up groundwater?

The Difficulty of Cleaning Groundwater

  • Because groundwater often travels through rock and soil, the ground must also be cleaned in addition to the groundwater, making cleaning groundwater very difficult.
  • Cleaning up groundwater is not practical because it is a very costly and time-consuming action with limited returns.
Study Tip
Consider the process of cleaning up groundwater. Do you think it is worth it to clean up groundwater?

The Process of Cleaning Groundwater

  • Eliminate th source of the pollution (i.e. a factory or an underwater tank).
  • Monitor and study the flow of the pollutants in order to examine the pollution.
  • Construct a barrier to separate the contaminated water.
  • Remediation techniques such as Bioremediation (using microorganisms that are engineered to neutralize toxins)or Chemical Remediation (injecting chemicals to neutralize toxins) can clean out pollutants.
Groundwater monitor
Devices such as this groundwater monitor can assist the cleansing process greatly.
