Geothermal Power

Study Tip
Due to the abundance of hot rocks in the Earth’s interior, geothermal power can be used almost anywhere on Earth.

Geothermal Power

  • Geothermal power uses the heat from the Earth to heat up water and spin turbines, generating electricity.
  • Geothermal energy is a clean and safe form of energy that can be used anywhere around the world.

Study Tip
The same way a person may cast a shadow over another person when they stand under the sun, planets or celestial bodies that have aligned themselves cast shadows over one another as well.

Geothermal Plants

  • Engineers can use a geothermal well such as a geyser or a hot spring to build geothermal plants that can harness the Earth’s natural energy.
  • In a geothermal power plant, a turbine is placed over a geothermal well. Whenever water or steam comes to the surface, the turbines spin and create energy.
  • When there isn’t a geyser or a hot spring in an area, engineers can drill into the Earth in order to find hot rock. Water is then pumped down to the hot rock, creating a geothermal well.
