Where Are Volcanoes?

  • Volcanoes are found on convergent plate boundaries, divergent plate boundaries, and lithospheric plates away from boundaries (wherever the mantle is able to melt).
  • Volcanic eruptions can occur in volcanic cones, domes, vents, and many other types of structures.

Creating Magma

  • Magma is created when mantle rock melts; this can be caused by high temperatures, low pressures, or added water.

Volcanic Stages

  • Active volcanoes are currently erupting, or showing signs of eruption soon.
  • Dormant volcanoes have no current activity, but have erupted recently.
  • Extinct volcanoes have had no activity for a long time, and will probably not erupt again.
